Emergency and Emergence

“With Absorption, we add attention and care to waste products, mixing them back into the immediately usable landscape.”

In Department of Absorption, artist Asad Raza presents his proposal to utilize waste products of the landscape to remediate the land in Nottingham. This project is a culmination of Raza’s series Absorption, in which cultivators create artificial soil known as ‘neosoil’. The separation and recombination of waste components can be used make a holistic world-building material neosoil. Department of Absorption explores the relationship of the community to waste and addresses the need to move away from sanitation through sterilisation.

This film is commissioned by Nottingham Contemporary’s Live Programmes for After Growth: A Symposium on Post-Capitalist Imaginaries which took place on 19-20 March 2022.
