Emergency and Emergence

Postnatural Supernatural comprises three short films that consider tree spirit beliefs within rural communities of the Philippines and how these intersect with colonisation, deforestation and bird decline. Each film blends narration, poetry and sound with paper-based artworks, photographic collage and performance. The works reanimate archival imagery, folk tales and botanical collections, and in so doing expose concealed images and voices. The films form part of Sourcebook – a collaborative research project and exhibition at LUX with artist Mandy El-Sayegh and curator Renan Laru-an that explores curatorial and artistic practices in UK and Philippine contexts, funded by British Council’s Connections Through Culture.
